Explore the strange and forgotten stories of Newcastle’s past. Hidden Newcastle uncovers the real people who once lived and worked in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Hidden Newcastle is a location aware mobile App and Game for the iPhone and Android device. It solves the challenge of taking the vast wealth of historic content available in Tyne and Wear Archives and Newcastle Libraries, and making it available to an audience who might not traditionally engage with it.
The focal point of Hidden Newcastle is people and their stories. As they move around Newcastle, they unlock stories of quirky characters from Newcastle’s past such as Blacky Jacky Johnson the Wizard who could make you invisible; John Wilson aka Cuckoo Jack, who was paid to collect dead bodies from the River Tyne; and Ellen Woodman, a young girl imprisoned for theft.
By focusing on the characters, Hidden Newcastle avoids turning into a history lecture but instead seeks to create a spark of interest through empathy; a spark that can then ignite into a passion to learn more.
